I regret to inform you that one of our past members, Mike Leese, passed away last weekend. Mike will be remembered by the longstanding members. Mike had been in poor health in recent times although he had enjoyed a fit and active life up until this time. Mike joined Coniston Sailing club in the 1970's together with his wife Noreen, and their children Judy and son Johnny. Judy is a very prominent member in the club. She is a past Commodore and is of course our membership secretary.
Mike, his family and their cat 'Skipper' enjoyed sailing their Telstar trimaran 'Triton' on Coniston and all were active club members. I am told that a particular pleasure of Mike's was to spend many an hour sitting on Triton at his mooring in the reeds on Coniston Water. They would also trail Triton to the west coast of Scotland each summer. This is no doubt when Judy developed her love for sailing in Scotland. In Mike's later years sailing at Coniston would be midweek sailing on his Lysander 'Second Wind'.
Mike's love of the Lake District led to him buying a barn in Grizebeck which he converted into a much loved and happy home. Mike remained there until eighteen months ago when he moved to Kendal.
Mike was a very friendly and interesting person to talk to. In working life, he was a head of English at Nelson and Colne College. He was a lover of outdoor exercise and enjoyed camping, cross country skiing and walking. He was also a Tai Chi instructor.
This man's life and love of the outdoors, sailing ,camping and walking has had a marked effect on his children's lives particularly Judy which shows in her devotion to Coniston Sailing club, a love of sailing in Scotland and walking.
